Tour de Cure

Dan-Gulf Biking TeamApril 15, 2009 ~  The Dan-Gulf Biking Team will join hundreds of other cyclists from around the region to participate in Tour de Cure, 26, 55 and 100 mile cycle event to benefit the American Diabetes Association. The ride will take place on May 30, 2009 from St. Francisville, Louisiana. Our reason, however, is far more important than the personal challenge of completing this ride. As participants in the ride we share the common goal of raising money to support the American Diabetes Association in its mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all those affected by diabetes.

We again have the privilege of dedicating this ride to Elisabeth Netherland, our office manager. Liz was diagnosed with diabetes 19 years ago and has endured a number of serious complications, including kidney failure requiring dialysis 3 times per week while waiting for a double transplant (kidney and pancreas) In spite of all these complications, Liz’s attitude is positive and her outlook on life is bright.

We are grateful for the many research advances that have helped her and many others to live productive lives. We now fully understand the powerful impact of contributions made by companies, foundations and individuals such as you. We ask that you consider helping us raise the support needed for us to complete this ride.  More importantly, we ask you to consider Liz and the 23 million other people in this country who suffer with this disease, including more than five million who don't even know it.

Your financial support will ensure that the many programs, education and research done by the American Diabetes Association will continue. We look forward to hopefully hearing from you or receiving your contribution in the mail within the next week.

Multiple Sclerosis Bike Tour

LAMWe are proud to announce that Dan-Gulf Shipping, Inc., will participate in the 25TH Anniversary of the BP MS 150 two day Bike Tour across the Texas hill country from Houston to Austin Texas.  We will join 13,000 other cyclists who will saddle up for the largest MS Bike event in the country on April 18th and 19th, 2009 in an effort to make a difference in the fight against Multiple Sclerosis.  MS is a chronic, often disabling disease of the autoimmune system that randomly attacks the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).  Healthy nerves are insulated by myelin, which is a fatty substance that helps messages flow smoothly along the nerve pathways.  In MS, the myelin breaks down and is replaced by scar tissue.   The scar tissue can distort or even block nerve messages. Body functions become uncontrolled because messages don’t get through properly.

The onset of symptoms usually occurs between the ages of 20 and 50, making MS one of the two most common neurological disease affecting young adults.  The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS cannot be predicted – symptoms range from tingling and numbness to paralysis and blindness.  MS is a devastating disease because people live with its unpredictable physical and emotional effects for the rest of their lives.

In writing this letter to you, we are also asking for your support in giving generously to the National MS Society on our behalf. As we ride, 180 miles, your sponsorship will inspire us to cross the finish line!  Whatever you can do to contribute will matter – it all adds up!

Should you need additional information or would like to pledge your support please notify us at  dgs@dan-gulf.com /phone 504-830-3900 or you may simply send your contribution to National MS Society  c/o Dan-Gulf Shipping, Inc.,  3117 7th Street, Suite 300, Metairie, LA 70002  or visit website: http://www.nationalmssociety.org

Thank you for your support in the fight against MS.

Best Regards,
Dan-Gulf Shipping
